Galerie Marzee

Founded in 1978 in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, Galerie Marzee is one of the principal promoters of international contemporary jewelry and silverware. Since 1995, the gallery has been housed in a former granary on Nijmegen’s waterfront, overlooking the River Waal. With 850 square meters of exhibition space, Galerie Marzee is one of the largest galleries in the Netherlands and the largest gallery for modern art jewelry in the world.

Alongside the permanent Marzee Collection, Galerie Marzee typically mounts four to five special temporary exhibitions every two months. See their Exhibitions page for a list of current and forthcoming exhibitions.

The gallery is unique in its support for emerging young jewelry artists, and its annual international Marzee Graduate Show (which runs from August to October) is one of the most significant events in Marzee’s calendar. Read Art Jewelry Forum’s article on the Marzee Graduate Show.

Marzee Collection

In June 2004, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, Galerie Marzee opened the Marzee Collection to the public. This permanent collection, displayed on the third floor of the gallery, comprises over 2,000 pieces of jewelry acquired since 1979. The collection includes work by some of the most influential jewelry artists of the late 20th century, as well as pieces by new young makers.

This seminal collection of international contemporary jewelry also features a series of combs created by renowned jewelers for a Marzee exhibition in 1989. Following the success of this pioneering project, the exhibition later traveled to, among other countries, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, bringing the gallery international recognition.

Marzee Prize

The annual Marzee Graduate Prize is awarded to the most promising students who are selected for participation in the Marzee Graduate Show. The prizewinners are offered a weeklong workshop at Atelier Ravary in Belgium, and the opportunity to exhibit the resulting work during the following year’s graduate show.

INTRO by Marzee

To mark Marzee’s 40-year anniversary, INTRO was established. INTRO by Marzee is a new and unique gallery in Amsterdam, focused exclusively on emerging jewelry artists. INTRO provides a space for recently graduated jewelry students to show and sell their work for a period of three years. It will be managed, in three-year cycles, by graduates and/or undergraduates from international schools and academies. Students and alumni from the Jewelry + Metalsmithing department at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI, USA, are managing the gallery for the inaugural three-year period. Learn more.
