Mariana Acosta

Mariana Acosta is a professor at Universidad Gestalt de Diseño in Xalapa, Mexico. For the past four years, she has been teaching graphic and industrial designers “Precious Waste, the Art of Rubbish Transformation,” a class project that challenges our personal interpretation and definition of waste through a process of experimentation and transformation of everyday objects that are discarded as they become useless in the ordinary world. Mariana holds a master’s in fine arts in jewelry and metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design (class of 2009). After graduating, she was faced with the dreaded challenge of every artist: survival. She resourced into her creative tool set and started a ongoing project of collecting and transforming her own rubbish. She recently gave a TED Talk in which she discusses her life and work.

Mariana Acosta Contreras inició en 2011 su clase-proyecto “Desechos Preciosos, el Arte de Transformar Basura” en la Universidad Gestalt de Diseño en la ciudad de Xalapa, México. Su clase-proyecto dirigida a estudiantes de diseño gráfico e industrial, cuestiona nociones personales sobre el significado de la basura por medio de un proceso de experimentación y transformación de objetos de uso cotidiano que normalmente son desechados a medida que cumplen las funciones para las que fueron creados en el mundo cotidiano. Mariana, tiene una maestría en bellas artes en joyería y herrería de metales por la Rhode Island School of Design (generación 2009). Al egresar de sus estudios, se vio enfrentada ante el reto de cualquier estudiante recién egresado: la supervivencia. Haciendo uso de sus herramientas creativas, inició este proyecto de vida al recolectar y transformar su propia basura. Recientemente dio un TEDx Talk en la universidad TAMIU, en Texas donde expone su trayectoria como artista de joyería contemporánea.
