CLOSING FEBRUARY 4: RING REDUX, AT NEW ORLEANS ART MUSEUM
100 innovative rings tell the story of art jewelry’s emergence in the postwar era via objects that were neither traditionally made luxury goods nor low-cost, mass-produced costume jewelry. They come from the collection of Susan Grant Lewin, one of the most influential collectors of 20th- and 21st-century art jewelry. JENNY JANSSON HAS JOINED FOUR
During the past year, Linnéa Eriksson moved on to new adventures, but Jansson has now joined the workshop/gallery. Jansson got her master’s degree at HDK-Valand in spring 2023 and will have an exhibition at Four at the end of the year. See more of her work now, here.


ORNAMENTUM GALLERY AT FOG DESIGN & ART: JANUARY 18–21, 2024
Presenting furniture, art, and objects by David Bielander, David Clarke, Aaron Decker, Iris Eichenberg, Veronika Fabian, Hanna Hedman, Jiro Kamata, Anders Ljungberg, Jaydan Moore, and Ted Noten, together with rings by Karl Fritsch and a selection of contemporary jewelry from international artists. At the Fort Mason Center, in San Francisco, with a preview gala January 17. Info.


UNCOMMON THREADS, ON SHOW AT PISTACHIOS CONTEMPORARY ART JEWELRY
The exhibition features work from Gilly Langton, Brooke Marks-Swanson, and Myung Urso. Each artist utilizes hand-dyed or hand-sewn fabric to create one-of-a-kind, wearable artworks—and in doing so, quite literally weaves the history of textiles and fiber arts into contemporary art jewelry. All three artists are renowned for their craftsmanship, and they have their work in numerous museums around the world. January 18–March 31, 2024. Info.

 

 

 


92NY JEWELRY CENTER: INTERNATIONAL JEWELRY ARTIST RESIDENCY
This juried residency for cutting edge, emerging, and established jewelry artists allows them to develop their work in the multifaceted New York City art scene. From August 19–September 15, 2024., the residency will provide the opportunity for an international artist with a studio-based practice to develop a new body of work or complete research while engaging with New York’s cultural community. APPLY FOR THE 32ND INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY COMPETITION
The 32nd International Jewellery Competition EMPATHY is organized by the Gallery of Art in Legnica (Poland). The deadline for sending works is January 20, 2024. A post-competition exhibition will be presented in the frame of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER in the Gallery of Art in Legnica from April to June 2024. The culmination of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER and the announcement of the winners takes place on May 10–11, 2024. Info.


FAUSTO MELOTTI: JEWELRY ON VIEW AT HAUSER & WIRTH
The first comprehensive survey of the Italian artist’s jewelry oeuvre, this exhibition highlights the sculptor’s meticulously crafted jewelry from the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, featuring exceptional creations in gold, silver, and brass, complemented by a focused selection of sculptures in the same materials. Eleanor Moty wrote to inform us that the world-renowned and award-winning German gem cutter died unexpectedly on December 28, 2023. He was 54. More.


WATCH PAULA A. BAXTER ON ART DEALER DIARIES
The 2022 book by the collector of, and expert on, Native American jewelry is Navajo and Pueblo Jewelry Design: 1870–1945. She’s currently working on a sequel that will cover 1946–2025. See her interview on YouTube, here.


LYNDA BENGLIS JEWELRY WINS AT WALLPAPER DESIGN AWARDS 2024
The American sculptor Lynda Benglis and the Spanish label Loewe collaborated on a collection. Benglis’ fascination with materials in transit—wax being poured, latex pooling into undulating puddles, pinched metals, bubbling foam—transforms into jewelry that appears frozen in time. More.


NEW JEWELRY COLLECTION PAYS TRIBUTE TO MAN RAY
Venyx’s nine limited-editions baubles draw on The Lovers (1936), Glass Tears (1932), and The Venus Restored (1936), reworking Man Ray’s distinctive codes into enamel, rock crystal, mother-of-pearl, and pavéd diamonds. More.

OPEN CALL: THE TRANSPARENT BREATH GLASS JEWELRY EXHIBITION
Join the most skilled international workers in the art of glass in exhibiting jewelry creations made of that material in Venice, cradle of an ancient artisan tradition that dates back to the seventh century BC. Deadline: May 30, 2024. Info.


OPEN CALL: [QUEERPHORIA] VOLUME 3: TRANSFORMATION EXHIBITION
Following the virtual exhibitions of volumes 1 + 2, Queer Metalsmiths encourages queer artists to contribute to an in-person showcase of art that explores the themes of resilience, joy, and the transformative power of creation. Deadline: February 1, 2024. Info.


CALL FOR ENTRIES: BATTLE OF THE RINGS
Also known as the Ring Smackdown, this head-to-head, tournament style, single-elimination juried competition and virtual event has a top prize of $500.  64 rings will be selected by two jurors and drafted into teams as selected by the jury; selected rings are then paired into matches for competition. All selected rings will be posted to Instagram and FB and available to purchase through Danaca Design Gallery’s Seattle showroom and online gallery. Deadline: January 22, 2024. Info.


HAYSTACK MOUNTAIN SCHOOL OF CRAFT: OPEN STUDIO RESIDENCY
This program, held May 26–June 7, 2024, will support approximately 50 participants—from the craft fields and other creative disciplines—with uninterrupted time to work in six studios (ceramics, blacksmithing, fiber, graphics, metals, and wood) to develop ideas and experiment in various media. Participants can choose to work in one particular studio or move among them depending on the nature of their work. Deadline: January 28, 2024. Info.


OPEN CALL: BY HAND
By Hand is a meditation on, and consideration of, the myriad ways in which the human hand is intrinsic to creative work and a demonstration of what human hands can make. Two- and three-dimensional works made between 2022 and 2024 are eligible for this international juried exhibition, which will run March 29–May 30, 2024. Deadline: January 31, 2024. Info.


FOUR-WEEK RESIDENCY IN JAPAN
The Hayama Artist Residency aims to introduce visual artists from around the world to Japanese culture and offer them an opportunity to have their first gallery exhibition in Japan. Spend June 1-30, 2024 in a small, coastal town. Deadline: January 31, 2024. Info.


CONTEMPORARY CRAFT ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE
People working in metalsmithing, jewelry, and other media—and who don’t live in Pittsburgh—may apply. Artists receive a $1,200 monthly stipend, housing, and studio space. Deadline: February 1, 2024. Info.

DANIEL KRUGER: THE UNEXPECTED MEANING OF CURIOUS THINGS
This new monograph shows Kruger’s jewelry of the last ten years. Fascinated by movement and the visual qualities of materials and objects, shapes, and colors, Kruger creates a synthesis of supposed opposites. A newly created context elevates these connections to treasures. Through his freedom of thought, he creates a world of objects to be viewed, but above all to decorate the body and the person.
