“STUDIO JEWELRY & ART JEWELRY” AUCTION ATTRACTED COLLECTORS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD

During the December 7, 2023, sale at Quittenbaum Art Auctions, works by Hermann Jünger were particularly popular. A gold bangle and a ring each fetched €6,650. At €12,900, a ring by Peter Hassenpflug set with different-colored sapphires was the priciest piece. The cover lot, playful earrings by Manfred Bischoff titled Amore am Ohre (Love on the Ear), changed hands for total proceeds of €6,650. Some beautiful works can still be purchased in the post-auction sale—here—until January 12, 2024. Quittenbaum holds two studio jewelry auctions per year. Look for exciting objects in June 2024. NOEL GUYOMARC’H WON THE 2023 CHARLES BIDDLE PRIZE
The award highlights the outstanding contribution of an individual who immigrated to Quebec and has contributed to the province’s cultural and artistic development. Congrats, Noel! Watch Télé-Québec’s video about the gallerist here.

THE JEWELRY LIBRARY IS THROWING AN ORNAMENT PARTY!

THE BALTIMORE JEWELRY CENTER OFFERS ONLINE CLASSES
Besides it many great in-person classes, the BJC is offering two online classes this winter. Hinges 3 Ways is a demo-focused workshop that will cover three ways to create a hinge; take it February 17–18, 2024. Digital Design: Rhino for Jewelry Production will give students a crash course in Rhino 7 techniques, focusing specifically on how to use the program to fully build pieces of jewelry from scratch (to be 3D printed and cast) or to create templates to use for enhanced hand fabrication; take it Wednesdays February 7–March 27, 2024. SCAD JEWELRY ON SHOW AT DESIGN MIAMI/
Six jewelry alumni displayed their work in the university’s booth at the fair, exploring material innovation as well as inspirations rooted in both the natural and man-made worlds. More.

MELANIE GEORGACOPOULOS’S WORK: WHAT A GIFT!
The AJF member’s work was included in Louisa Guiness Gallery’s “Contemporary Designers ‘Statement Pieces’” gift guide, with a big photo front and center.

SÉBASTIEN CARRÉ TO EXHIBIT DURING MUNICH JEWELRY WEEK 2024
The AJF member will have a group show with Isabelle Busnel and Juan Riusech called Drag & Drop #2 at Werkstatt Galerie, Zentnerstr. 3. 80798 Munich, February 28–March 1, 2–6:30 p.m.; March 2: 10 a.m.–12 a.m.; opening: February 28: 6:30–8:30 p.m.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: AMBERTRIP ART JEWELLERY CONTEST
The theme: Inclusive. Amber was formed millions of years ago from fossilized resin. The malleable substance trapped anything that got into it— bugs, pebbles, leaves, lizards. You could say it’s a conciliatory material. It doesn’t discriminate, it includes. This is one of its main characteristics, and it’s important not only in the context of jewelry, but AmberTrip aims to look beyond that. Juried by Ruudt Peters, Giedymin Jablonski, Laima Kėrienė, and Jurgita Ludavičienė. Deadline: February 1, 2024. Apply here.

HEAR GABI VEIT ON THE JEWELRY JOURNEY
Veit is an Italian artist and jewelry designer with a passion for spoons. Having grown up in South Tyrol, she creates jewelry that celebrates the rough and jagged shapes and outlines of her home country’s rocks and mountains. Her unique spoons surprise the beholder with unusual shapes borrowed from plant life. Listen to the podcast.

APPLY FOR THE 32ND INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY COMPETITION

The 32nd International Jewellery Competition EMPATHY is organized by the Gallery of Art in Legnica (Poland). The deadline for sending works is January 20, 2024. A post-competition exhibition will be presented in the frame of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER in the Gallery of Art in Legnica from April to June 2024. The culmination of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER and the announcement of the winners will take place on May 10–11, 2024. Info.

HANDWERK & DESIGN IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER: FEBRUARY 28–MARCH 3, 2024
The fair will present the finest craftsmanship and first-class contemporary arts and crafts at the Munich fairground. With its prestigious galleries, FRAME will form a framework around the most important show of contemporary author jewelry, Schmuck.

GEORGINA TREVIÑO’S BOOTH IS AMONG THE BEST DISPLAYS, SAYS ARTNEWS
Two metal handbags and a swing at New Art Dealers Alliance Miami grabbed attention. “The handbags are vicious. One consists of a box grater off which hangs dozens of real knives.” The other, Quítate el Esmalte, was decorated with carabiners, nail clippers, and big, flashy stacked rings, “each with the size tag still attached, as if they were stolen from a smash-and-grab at a jewelry store.” More.

Diane Neuville’s designs feature motifs recognizable to both children and adults, like Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage, a musical staff, and butterflies—in luxe materials like 18-karat rose and yellow gold, emeralds from Brazil, blue Ceylon sapphires from Sri Lanka, and sapphires from Madagascar. CALL FOR ENTRIES: 2024 JAPAN JEWELLERY COMPETITION
The Japan Jewellery Designers Association’s competition has received high praise from domestic and international cultural and design circles, and has shown outstanding artists and designers as it constantly explores creative and fresh forms of jewelry. Entries from around the globe are welcome. Selected works will be exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in June 2024. Deadline: February 1, 2024. Info.

CALL FOR BRING ON THE GEMS, A SNAG EXHIBITION
The multi-faceted exhibition will highlight SNAG’s diverse membership. There are two entry options: a juried in-person exhibition at SNAG @ Tucson during the Tucson Gem Show, and an online exhibition (all submissions will be included in the online exhibition). This exhibition will showcase pieces that include gems, pearls, minerals, or rocks of any and all types. Traditional, non-traditional, and avant-garde uses of these materials in adornment are all desired. Deadline: December 20, 2023. Info.

APPLY FOR A MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN RESIDENCY
Three artists (two Artist Studios residents and one Artist Fellow) are selected per six-month session. They receive access to studio space in the museum and a stipend. Visitors are welcome to visit MAD’s artist studios three days each week to view works in progress and converse with the artists and designers. Deadline: January 7, 2024. Info.

CODOGNATO MASTERPIECE, FROM ASSOULINE
Casa Codognato, established in Venice in 1866, became renowned for its memento mori designs. The company emerged as one of Europe’s most unique jewelers, attracting luminaries like Gabrielle Chanel, Jean Cocteau, and Diana Vreeland. Their jewels became sensations during Venice’s glamorous society ball era, adorning icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas, and Jacqueline Kennedy. Attilio Codognato, the great-grandson of the founder, introduced ancient intaglios and cameos. (Coincidentally, he died last month, aged 86.) This opulent volume presents Codognato’s extraordinary baroque jewels in the captivating backdrop of Venice, a timeless muse for artists and poets. More.
