OUR NEXT AJF LIVE GUEST STARS HELEN DRUTT—OCTOBER 16, 2024
Drutt was the founder/director of her eponymous gallery in Philadelphia (1973–2002), one of the first US galleries to commmit to the modern and contemporary craft movement. In 2002, 800 jewelry and related works from The Helen Williams Drutt Collection permanently entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Drutt has published numerous essays in the field of jewelry, conceived jewelry exhibitions, and curated American studio jewelry for the Museo del Gioiello. This will be a ticketed event. ON VIEW—ORIZZONTI D’AUTORE: BETWEEN BODY AND SOUL
In Asolo, Italy, through January 6, 2025: an exhibition of works by 20 international invited artists; a retrospective of the work of Robert Smit (also presented with the Archeometra Lifetime Achievement Award). Also: guided visit with Eliana Negroni, October 26, 2024; presentation of the book Bruno Pedrosa: Between Worlds, November 30, 2024. More info about this biennial here.


ZU DESIGN & JANE BOWDEN REVIEWED
“Bowden introduces a (literally) dazzling array of neckpieces, bangles, earrings, brooches and rings – the outcome of intricate (and continually evolving) new techniques she has developed for this impressive body of work,” writes Wendy Walker of the exhibition at JamFactory. Read the review.


BJC FOCUS: IN THE MAKING—OCTOBER 5–6, 2024
The symposium will investigate the role of memory and archiving in the processes artists and makers use to source inspiration, conduct research, create work, and document their projects. Featured speakers: Lamar Gayles, Ana María Jiménez, Maria Konschake, and Manon van Kouswijk. A day of online lectures and conversations will be followed by a day of free workshops in the Baltimore Jewelry Center’s studio, each connected to the symposium theme. The event will culminate with a charge to artists to participate in the BJC’s community challenge, which will engage the community in launching the BJC’s newest initiative: a digital archive capturing our history and evolution. Info.


LOOSE ENDS, AT JEWELERS’WERK: SEPTEMBER 21–OCTOBER 12, 2024
Lydia Martin is tying up loose ends with this exhibition, wrapping up a body of work whose long process of creating, contemplating, and solving the unresolved began in 2017. Her hands torsion, knot and stretch, and bend and flow silver—the metal of her choice—in elastic ways, freeing it from preconceived forms, shapes, or notions of metalworking perfection. More.


METAL MUSEUM HOLDS CEREMONIAL GROUNDBREAKING
Rust Hall, at the former Memphis College of Art’s campus in Memphis, TN, is coming back, this time as the Metal Museum’s new home. During a ceremony on August 29, 2024, attendees lit sparklers instead of celebrating with shovels and dirt. “We don’t tear down our history, we embrace it,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said during the event. “I can’t wait for the Metal Museum to bring new life into this building.” More.


BISCHOFF + BABETTO, AT THEREZA PEDROSA GALLERY THROUGH OCTOBER 20, 2024.
Works by Manfred Bischoff and Giampaolo Babetto—iconic masters of art jewelry—will be showcased together for the first time. Bischoff was known for telling stories through his pieces. Babetto’s clean, modular designs are celebrated for their sculptural quality. In collaboration with Quittenbaum Gallery. More.


DRAG AND DROP, AT PLATINA THROUGH SEPTEMBER 28, 2024
For this second edition, Isabelle Busnel, Sébastien Carré, and Juan Riusech each selected a historical piece of jewelry and, without revealing it, wrote a statement describing the work emotionally. The others had to imagine and re-create the historical pieces with that info. In a next step, they all made interpretations of the originals—now revealed—with their preferred materials and styles. It’s challenging to imitate someone’s else work with different materials and techniques! More.


JOHN ROSE APPOINTED VP OF ORANGE COUNTY FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION
Rose has worked with national and international nonprofit arts organizations for 50+ years. He’s a professional artist and partner in 2Roses, an award-winning international design studio. He has also led AJF’s marketing committee since 2014 and is on our Editorial Advisory Committee.


UTE DECKER WILL EXHIBIT AT GOLDSMITHS’ FAIR
The leading annual event showcases the work of Britain’s foremost internationally renowned and emerging studio jewelers and silversmiths, whose work represents contemporary jewelry, classical fine jewelry, contemporary silver, and classical silversmithing. Accompanied by talks and curated exhibitions. Held in the splendid Goldsmiths Hall over two weeks, each week showcases a different group of makers. Find Ute Decker week one, September 24–29, 2024. OCFA SHOWCASE GALLERY SEEKS JEWELRY ARTISTS
Orange County Fine Arts is a member-driven organization whose mission is to develop the Southern California arts community through opportunities to show art and advance careers. The gallery will now exhibit artisan-made contemporary jewelry. All media is welcome. For info about showing your work, email the gallery’s director, Gina Barnes.


SIERAAD FAIR CLOSES DOWN PERMANENTLY
“Maarten will soon turn 72—we have to make a choice,” wrote organizers Astrid Berens and Maarten Bodt in a newsletter. “Although organizing the last edition in the picturesque town of Buren was a lot of fun, we have decided that it was our last edition.” SIERAAD was founded in 2001.


NICOLE ACOSTA: HOOPS, AT RACINE ART MUSEUM THROUGH NOVEMBER 23, 2024
Milwaukee-based artist Nicole Acosta has created portraits of individuals in hoop earrings. Acosta gathers the voices of people as they share stories prompted by the question, “What do hoop earrings mean to you?” The images evoke the personality of the sitter and engage in a dialogue about the symbolic power of jewelry. HELEN BRITTON IS WORKING TOWARD A MAJOR SOLO EXHIBITION
Britton will be the 10th artist in the exhibition series Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft, at Australian Design Centre. These exhibitions feature eminent Australian craftspeople, celebrating their mastery of skill and the unique place they occupy in the national design culture through a touring exhibition and a major monograph publication. The focus is on current work. More.

PASSINGS

ROB KOUDIJS PASSED AWAY AT AGE 80
He founded Galerie Rob Koudijs, in Amsterdam, in April 2007. It played a critical role in the Dutch jewelry community. In an interview published on AJF, Kamal Nassif asked Koudijs to describe his collection in one sentence. Koudijs’s answer: “Innovative, sculptural works of art enhanced by the presence of craft and technique that can almost always be worn as jewelry.” Our thoughts go out to his husband, Ward Schrijver, and their friends and family.

MARZEE GRADUATE PRIZE
The show champions the work of a new generation of jewelry artists. The 2024 prize recipients, chosen from 75 participants on show, are: Affo Bishara, Esther Gleuwitz, Sonia Jurado, Hyung-Chan Lee, Erik Lijzenga, Joe Pillari, Helena Renner, Miriam Strake, and Hong Zhou. SECOND BLOOM EXHIBITION AT RADIANT PAVILION
Vicki Mason’s show of jewelry and wall sculptures explores themes of regeneration expressed through Australia’s iconic motifs, the wattle and eucalyptus flower. The wall works are made from waste: pedestal fan covers, plastic packaging strapping for the stamens, discarded paints etc. Kept out of landfills, these resources are transformed into jewels writ large. THERE’S POETRY IN THE MARINE JEWELRY OF TINEKE VAN DER EECKEN
Mags Webster reviews Concurrencies, an exhibition of castings, artwork, poetry, and objects by multidisciplinary creative practitioner Tineke Van der Eecken, drawn from and inspired by the ocean. More in Garland.


LINDSAY MACDONALD REVIEWS SUNDAY FUNNIES
Nick Rosin has “exquisitely fabricated artifacts of day-to-day life, from cigarette packets to fast food wrappers, and emblazoned them with comic-style scenes of modern-day revelry. From tea and pie to bodily functions and recreational drug use, in Rosin’s world, nothing is sacred.” More.

The grants, through CERF+ (Craft Emergency Relief Fund), provide up to $1,000 to individual artists working in craft disciplines to carry out activities that will help secure their studios, protect their businesses, plan their legacies, and prepare for emergencies. CALL FOR ENTRY: [QUEERPHORIA] VOL.4: CONNECTION
This immersive in-person exhibition, at NYCJW24, will build on the previous three volumes and explore the concept of connection in its broadest form. For this semi-annual pop-up exhibition of contemporary jewelry at Kendall Reiss Gallery & Studio, in Bristol, RI, emerging and established contemporary jewelers may submit up to five works for consideration. For its annual holiday group show, Galerie Lewis, in Quebec City, seeks pieces that explore the notion of “Unchained,” whether it’s the symbolic exploration of finding freedom or becoming untethered, or a direct exploration of the physical chain itself. Deadline: October 31, 2024. More.


CALL FOR ENTRY: EQUAL TEMPERAMENT
This exhibition at the Kentucky Museum will highlight the inclusivity of modern metalworking in a juried art show, accompanied by a variety of interpretive programming to showcase metal’s links with other artistic and historical forms. Deadline: October 1, 2024. More.


ARTIST RESIDENCY AT A PHILADELPHIA WASTE RECYLCING CENTER
Two residency programs, in Philadelphia, PA, give access to the waste stream of a company called Revolution Recovery. RAIR’s staff works closely with all residents, both while picking in the yard and in the studio. Deadline: September 30, 2024. More.


CORE FELLOWSHIP AT PENLAND SCHOOL OF CRAFT
A two-year work-study fellowship for early-career artists looking to expand technical skills and material fluency while working to support the day-to-day operations of a craft school.
