THE CURATOR OF BEYOND BRILLIANCE GIVES HER FIRST TALK ON THE EXHIBITION
Join us for AJF Live with Dr. Emily Stoehrer, June 26, 2024, 12 p.m. EST. Online, free and open to all. Register here. Dr. Stoehrer will discuss Beyond Brilliance: Jewelry Highlights from the Collection, the newly reopened jewelry-focused gallery at MFA, Boston. For the last decade, this space has contained rotating exhibitions. Beyond Brilliance, however, is a permanent display. From ancient artifacts to fine jewelry to designs made by contemporary artists, the 160 objects on view span 4,000 years, exploring how jewelry can communicate strong messages about its wearer and exemplify the art and culture of its time. The works are not just from the US and Europe, but from around the globe, and across all genres of jewelry. Bella Neyman will lead the conversation.

AJF LIVE WITH BRYAN PARNHAM, JULY 31, 2024, 12 P.M. EST
We’ll be speaking with the 2024 Young Artist Award winner. Jewelry-making is a bit of an accident for Parnham. He wants to be a painter, a photographer, a printmaker, a sculptor, an engineer, a scientist, a philosopher, a comedian, a scholar. But not just one— he wants to pick and choose combinations and weave between them. Jewelry is small and relatively permissive. BRACELETS, BANGLES AND CUFFS: 1948–2024, AT THE METAL MUSEUM THROUGH NOVEMBER 17, 2024
This exhibition features a remarkable collection of contemporary bracelets owned by Helen Drutt, an AJF member and a renowned educator, gallery owner, author, patron of the arts, and advocate of modern and contemporary craft. Over 90 examples by international artists examine cultural, political, and personal meanings wrapped around a wearer’s wrist. Drutt adds historic context and scholarly weight to the diverse pieces on display, which illustrate a wide variety of traditional metalsmithing techniques, experimental methods and materials, and contemporary processes. SUSAN GRANT LEWIN AND URSULA ILSE-NEUMAN TO GIVE GALLERY TALK
The preeminent collector—a member of AJF—and the consulting curator will guide attendees through a thought-provoking exploration and conversation to give a deeper understanding of the works on display, the context behind them, and the creative vision that unites them. GLOWING OPENING PARTY FOR MONIEK SCHRIJER SHOW AT GALERIE DOOR, JUNE 8, 2024
For her first European solo exhibition, titled Glowworm, Schrijer brought over New Zealand sparkles, stones, stones, more stones, painted driftwood, fabulous art jewelry, and some magnificent wall jewelry. Schrijer (born 1983) began her jewelry studies in 2004 and graduated from Whitireia Polytechnic Faculty of Arts with a Bachelor of Applied Arts – Contemporary Jewellery in 2013. She has had many successes, including receiving the Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2016, and recently presented a significant project, “A Hologram of a Diamond,” at the City Gallery (Wellington, NZ). Her work has been acquired by museum collections in France, Germany, and Aotearoa.

HEATHER WHITE—OPEN, CLOSED, AJAR: THE ALLEGORICAL LOCKET, AT JEWELERS’WERK GALERIE
White is a studio jeweler and metalsmith whose wearable objects explore beauty and imperfection as corporeal expression. Her ideas of adornment challenge thresholds of traditional lost-wax casting, inviting unexpected results in the centrifuge, embellishing flaws with enamel, silver, and gold. She also teaches at MassArt. Through July 5, 2024. More.

GROUP EXHIBITION AT THE BJC: TRANSFORMING THE PROTOTYPE 2
Building on the success of the 2022 exhibition Transforming the Prototype, the Baltimore Jewelry Center, Montgomery College, and Towson University invited students, alumni, and emerging and established artists to apply for the show. Participants received a collection of traditional vintage wax patterns which they radically reimagined into bespoke object(s) or jewelry. Juried by Mary Hallam Pearse, Associate Professor of Art in Metals & Jewelry at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. Best in show artists include Claire Webb, Emily Culver, Seville Partida, and Audrey Zhou. Through July 31, 2024. More.

TAKE A WORKSHOP WITH LYNN BATCHELDER: “ANODIZE + DYE”
Anodizing creates a thin, porous layer on aluminum—an exterior skin that can permanently absorb color through dyes. In the workshop, Batchelder, an AJF member and the winner of the 2016 AJF Artist Award, will cover surface preparation and the complete aluminum anodization process. Students will explore dye applications to transform this industrial process through thoughtful outcomes that meld form and surface. At Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, August 11–16, 2024. More.

MORE IS MORE: JUNE 8–JULY 13, 2024
This exhibition features new work by 15 established and emerging jewelry artists from around the US, focusing on the transformative powers of wearing bold and engaging jewelry and celebrating work that expresses the experimental and playful side of the artist and the wearer. CHERYL R. RILEY’S SCULPTURE NECKLACES ON VIEW AT BERGDORF GOODMAN
They all include the ceramics that AJF member @cherylrriley threw and fired during her Oxbow residency, using the forms of her Glyphs, the language of a mythological, matriarchal society. Three of Riley’s Kaleidoscope prints are also on view. See them on the seventh floor of the department store through August 5, 2024. They’re part of the Kaleidoscope Project, a cultural creative collaborative.

JENNIFER MERCHANT ON THE JEWELRY JOURNEY PODCAST
Merchant is best known for her innovative layered acrylic process in which images and prints are layered between solid acrylic. Her work is graphic with clean lines and modern aesthetic. Pieces confound viewers, appearing transparent from one angle of view while showcasing bold patterns and colors from another. Listen here.

LA PAURA DI SBAGLIARE (THE FEAR OF MAKING MISTAKES)
This exhibition, at Thereza Pedrosa Gallery, explores the beauty you can find just beyond your fears. It features the captivating works of Beate Klockmann, Philip Sajet, and Bruno Pedrosa. From wearable art to evocative watercolors, each piece boldly plays with colors and contrasts, reminding us that beauty comes from the courage to take risks and the power of embracing the unexpected.

NEW ARTIST AT MOBILIA GALLERY: NEW ZEALAND’S NEIL ADCOCK
Adcock’s passion for sculptural forms is evident in his powerful work, which showcases New Zealand treasures such as amber, jasper, and kauri copal gum. His strong, distinctive designs highlight the qualities and characteristics of his materials, including vividly colored traditional gem stones, often framed with South Island gold and titanium. ONLINE: CATALOG OF THE 32ND INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY COMPETITION “EMPATHY”
It presents works by 44 artists from 21 countries qualified for the post-competition exhibition presented in the Gallery of Art in Legnica (Poland). Check it out here.

WATCH “ICONOGRAPHIES & SYMBOLS IN BLACK AMERICAN JEWELRY”
In celebration of Juneteenth, NYCJW shared the video from Dr. LaMar R. Gayles, Jr.’s presentation from NYCJW 2023. His talk surveys the culture of Black American jewelry, showcasing how artists within the Black diaspora create pieces that go far beyond mere adornment. Watch it here.

CHRISTIE’S REVIEWS OUT OF THE JEWELRY BOX
Queer perspectives shine in the latest art jewelry exhibition at MAD, which brings together boundary-pushing wearables from LGBTQ+ makers, many from the collection of Ron Porter and Joe Price. Prior to acquiring the works for the museum, curator Barbara Paris Gifford spent three days at the couple’s home, exploring their extensive array of provocative and brave studio jewelry, with an emphasis on works that encompass important social issues of the day and speak to what the collectors call their “gay sensibility.” Read it here.

ANNETTE DAM HAS FOUNDED A JEWELRY EXHIBITION PLATFORM
Spacious Copenhagen aims to question and actively extend the borders within the praxis of art jewelry, and to nurture collaborative culture. Its inaugural exhibition, Silver Lining, was a friendly takeover of Gallery Specta, June 12–16, 2024. More.

BABETTE VON DOHNANYI TO SHOW AT FARBENSPIEL, AT KUNST UND HANDWERK: JULY 5–AUGUST 31, 2024
In Farbenspiel (ColorPlay), 120+ exhibitors from all areas of arts and crafts will show in the Munich gallery of the Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein. L’ÉTRANGÈRE, CURATED BY ELENA KARPILOVA: JUNE 24–28, 2024
International exhibition about forced migration. Held in the flat of the show’s migrant curator, a frequent AJF contributor. During your visit, you can eat and even take a nap. JOYCE J. SCOTT IS THE QUEEN OF BALTIMORE
The MacArthur Genius award-winning artist was featured on the front page of the Arts section in this Sunday’s NYT! For the past several months, the city has been in full-on celebration mode for Scott. The Baltimore Museum of Art has mounted a 50-year retrospective of her work. CAN SUN EXPERIMENTS WITH JEWELRY
Jewelry is not the London-based Chinese artist’s primary medium, but he returns to it repeatedly in his absurdist practice. He has created a candle to wear as a ring. He has carved apples into linked chains. A tight ring with the message “love u” on it, when removed, leaves the words “help me” imprinted on the finger. And then there’s this Wedding Ring, with so many layers of meaning. More.

The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority upheld the Natural Diamond Council’s complaint against retailer Skydiamond’s marketing and advertisements. The ads do not make it clear that the diamonds were lab grown. More.

GRILLZ WORKSHOP IN LONDON IS A BIG HIT
K2 Academy of Contemporary Jewellery’s first course on the subject, in September 2023, attracted students from as far afield as Berlin and Antwerp. More. The fashionable dental accessories are crafted primarily from gold, silver, and platinum. Teeth are all unique, so the grillz vary in shape and size . They can be easily attached and detached, either onto a single tooth or multiple teeth. The next class, taught by Melvin Faria and David Ogunleye, takes place July 19–21 and August 3, 2024.
