Bryan Parnham, Stack #4

AJF LIVE WITH BRYAN PARNHAM, JULY 31, 2024, 12 P.M. EST
We’ll be speaking with the 2024 Young Artist Award winner. Jewelry-making is a bit of an accident for Parnham. He wants to be a painter, a photographer, a printmaker, a sculptor, an engineer, a scientist, a philosopher, a comedian, a scholar. But not just one— he wants to pick and choose combinations and weave between them. Jewelry is small and relatively permissive. It’s the right place to poke at the boundaries that separate different mediums. Online, free and open to all. Register here.

ART JEWELRY TAKES THE STAGE ON ANTIQUES ROADSHOW UK!
Jane Bowden, of Zu design, spotted this episode on YouTube. A segment called “Basic, Better, Best” asked the appraiser to classify items from least to most expensive. It featured neckpieces by Caroline Broadhead, Wendy Ramshaw, and Adam Paxon (as well as earrings by Nora Fok). The segment begins at 26:41. “It was great that they were showing people the value of the pieces,” says Bowden, “and how collectable contemporary jewelry is!” —And why, may we add! Note: Didier Ltd wrote AJF to say they loaned the jewelry pieces shown on the show.

CHERYL R. RILEY INTERVIEWED IN METALSMITH
Sebastian Grant interviewed her about her Sculptures in the Form of Necklaces series for the current issue of the magazine (Volume 44, Number 1). Read it here. @cherylrriley guest starred on AJF Live in May 2022—rewatch that here.

OTHER NEWS

BILL SMITH: JEWELRY’S MAVERICK, AT FORT WAYNE MUSEUM OF ART
Smith was one of the most innovative jewelry designers of the 60s and 70s. His outlandish costume and body jewelry was often made from industrial materials and inspired by Africa and the Middle East. He received a Coty Award in 1970, and was VP of premier jewelry firm Richelieu—both unprecedented feats for a Black designer. But since his death 30+ years ago, Smith’s important contributions have been largely forgotten. With 100+ pieces, this is the most comprehensive showing of his work to date. Info. JoAnne Spiller co-curated the exhibition. We interviewed her here.
