AJF is pleased to announce that the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, is the recipient of the AJF 2010 jewelry exhibition award. Perry A Price, assistant curator of exhibitions and collections, submitted the winning proposal.
The $1000 award will support the production of a catalog for the exhibition Atelier Janiyé and the Legacy of Miye Matsukata.
Celebrating the work and legacy of Boston-based jewelry artist Miye Matsukata, this exhibition presents for the first time a retrospective selection of Matsukata’s work alongside the work of her colleagues Nancy Wills Michel, Alexandra Solowij Watkins and Yoshiko Yamamoto. Matsukata and her colleagues are known for combining precious and semi-precious stones with found objects, antiques and 24-karat, multi-textured gold. Matsukata (1922-1981) contributed to the changing profile and reception of the jeweler as artist.
The exhibition will include approximately 100 pieces of jewelry by Matsukata, Michel, Watkins and Yamamoto from the late 1940s to the present, including drawings and work sketches that have not been shown before. The exhibit will open January 22, 2011 and runs until July 24, 2011.
The goal of the AJF jewelry exhibition award is to encourage and promote activities consistent with the mission of AJF and promote art jewelry to the broader community. The award can be used for exhibition and catalog expenses. Applicants for the award must be tax-exempt in the United States. The focus of the application must be on contemporary art jewelry and exhibitions must be held within the United States.
