AJF LIVE WITH HELEN DRUTT: OCTOBER 16, 2024, 12 P.M. EST
AJF has teamed up with the Metal Museum and the esteemed collector, educator, and gallerist for a virtual walk-through of Bracelets, Bangles & Cuffs: 1948–2024. Drutt will discuss the exhibition she curated and the wide-ranging approach artists have taken to innovate this singular object. This remarkable group of contemporary bracelets from her collection and others reveals the wide-ranging creativity of artists working in this timeless jewelry form between 1948 and today. The exhibition is currently on view at the Metal Museum, in Memphis, TN, US. Carissa Hussong, the Metal Museum’s director, will join us to talk about the ways the museum is considering jewelry in its programs and collections. Free and open to all. Register here.

FINGERS CELEBRATES IT 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A GROUP SHOW
The Auckland gallery hosts a group show every October. This year, at Golden, you’ll see works by Moniek Schrijer, Vicki Mason, Andrea Daly, Jane Dodd, Joe Sheehan, Jack Vogelesang, A+M, and so many more. The show will close toward the end of the month—check with the gallery (website here).


REPAIR DAYS: OCTOBER 17–20, 2024
Bring your old, broken metal items to the Metal Museum to have them restored to their former glory. Repairs are made by volunteers, including students and their profs. Info.


TAKAYOSHI TERAJIMA AT FOUR: THROUGH OCTOBER 19, 2024
As a reflection of his identity, Takayoshi Terajima gives AI his name, birthday, family structure, religion, nationality, and other information to make “self-portraits.” The images are then refined with engraving, a traditional technique with a long history, and the result is work with depth in both time, space and emotion. ZU DESIGN INTERVEWED IN GARLAND MAG
Since 1997, Jane Bowden’s jewelry gallery and workshop in an Adelaide shopping arcade has represented over 300 contemporary jewelers from around Australia. More.

 


OLD LIGHT OPENS OCTOBER 26, 2024, AT JEWELERS’WERK GALERIE
Carolanne Patterson collects old flashlights. Two years ago she began photographing them and drawing over the photos with Sumi ink. The drawings of the anthropomorphized flashlights, their eyes watching, mix with the artist’s interpretations of electrical diagrams. The results are fantastic, wondrous drawings of landscapes, and illuminated, sculptural objects to be worn, or held in hands or in our pockets. More.


2 + 2 + 2, AT GALERIE NOEL GUYOMARC’H
Two artists represented by the gallery, Eija Mustonen and Helena Lehtinen, were asked to invite two artists of their choice for an exhibition. The result: Helena Lehtinen + Sofia Björkman + Nils Hint, and Eija Mustonen + Ketli Tiitsar + Jutta Kallfelz. View the show through November 9, 2024. See the works here.


OFFERINGS / FRAGMENTS OF AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, AT ORNAMENTUM
“What is the shared language we speak?” ask Iris Eichenberg and Jimena Rios. “Which pieces of jewelry are part of our common vocabulary? Initially, the ones without authorship, those that are not centered on an author’s personal feelings but rather offer us space to read and evoke.” Through October 21, 2024. More.


CALL FOR ENTRY: WOW EFFECT!
Artists from all over the world, goldsmiths, designers, professional and amateur jewelry makers are invited to participate in the 33rd International Jewellery Competition “WOW Effect!” It will be the main event of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER 2025. The organizers leave artists full freedom of choice of techniques and materials, noting that a key criterion for evaluation is a clear reference to the competition’s main theme. WEARING RED: IGNITE THE FIRE, AT PISTACHIOS CONTEMPORARY ART JEWELRY
Curated by Charon Kransen, this traveling exhibition will feature over 60 critically acclaimed international artists. Conceptually, it explores the various meanings associated with this bold color—passion, love, lust, anger, war, religion, or status, to name a few. November 14, 2024–January 18, 2025. Info.


THE METAL MUSEUM IS HIRING
Are you passionate about metalsmithing and education? The museum seeks a creative and enthusiastic Museum Educator to join its team. This role involves developing and leading hands-on classes, workshops, and outreach programs to engage the public in the art of fine metalwork. More.


NEWS FROM KHANYA MTHETHWA
This pendant, by the winner of the 2023 Susan Beech Mid-Career Grant, is currently in China. It was selected for the Seeding exhibition, for which pieces will be buried in the ground until 2026. See Mthethwa’s IG for more info.


VIDEO INTERVIEWS WITH CINDI STRAUSS AND LYNDA WATSON
The American Craft Council held an online celebration for the 2024 ACC Awards. Strauss, who leads AJF’s Editorial Advisory Committee, works as a curator at the MFA, Houston. JILL MELYSSA SELECTED FOR ACC EMERGING ARTIST COHORT
New AJF supporter Jill Melyssa was one of 11 selected as this year’s American Craft Council’s emerging artist cohort. She completed the intensive program and is currently working on creating new sculptural designs in her studio in Charlotte, NC, US. More.

ENJOIA’T AWARDS 2024 WINNERS
See all the winning pieces here. Chiyang Duan is one of the finalists, selected for In Honor to Your Service (shown at left). “This piece is based on the UN Medal, awarded to countries participating in military and humanitarian operations,” says the maker. “When a country vetoes a ceasefire agreement supported by all other members, I realize that there is, in fact, a nation above all others. … This piece commemorates this twisted period in world history.”


SILVER + FORM: OCTOBER 19–20, 2024
This new exhibition and fair will take place at the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery, in Margate, UK. It will showcase a collection of contemporary jewelry, silverware, objets d’art, and sculptures crafted by some of the most talented silversmiths and metalsmiths in the UK. Info.


SEE PREZIOSA YOUNG 2023
The works of the winners of the latest edition of the competition, organized by Le Arti Orafe Jewelery School, will be on view at the Oratorio San Rocco, in Padua, Italy, October 18–November 10, 2024. More.

The actress, nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, wore a gown and a copper chest plate, cuff, and rings by Agnes Seaweed Wisden @ms.seawisdom to the Emmys.


AN ANTIQUE CHARM CONCEALED PORN
Made in the early 20th century, the little gold-painted pig held a tiny erotic photo viewed by peering through a hole in the pig’s backside. Charming! More.

Milano Jewelry Week creates moments of exchange and interaction, captivating trade operators and attracting the public thanks to a calendar full of events: exhibitions, presentations, workshops, talks, awards, live performances, and vernissage. The event develops in Milano’s center within exclusive and evocative locations in the city: historic buildings, high jewelry ateliers, goldsmith workshops, academies, art galleries, fashion boutiques, and design showrooms. Info.

Recognizes uniquely talented artisans whose artistic vision and will to innovate set new standards for the future of craft. Prize: €50,000. The shortlisted and winning works will be featured in an exhibition and accompanying catalog in Madrid in spring 2025. Deadline: October 30, 2024. Info.


DESIGNERS IN RESIDENCE 2025, PFORZHEIM, GERMANY
The international design scholarship is granted to young design artists from the fields of jewelry, fashion, accessory, industrial and graphic and other areas of design. Three designers will work on their projects from April 1 to June 30, 2025, at EMMA Creative Center, the central platform for creative people in Pforzheim. Jiro Kamata is among the jurors. Info.


THE JOURNAL OF JEWELLERY RESEARCH SEEKS PAPERS
