The jewelry company has just the thing, with its temporary outpost/immersive gallery in New York City to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Serpenti collection. Artnet reports.
Do you sleep in your jewelry? Health Digest says it’s bad for you. But Vogue disagrees and—in what may be sponsored content—goes on to point out a specific sort of earring back that’s more comfortable to doze in. Ah, the intellectual rigors! You probably shouldn’t wear your art jewelry to bed—you might damage it.
PAGES
PEARL: NATURE’S PERFECT GEM
An illustrated account of pearls through millennia, from fossils to contemporary jewelry. Pearls are both miraculous and familiar. Uniquely organic in origin, they are as intimate as our bodies, created through the same process by which we grow bones and teeth. They have long been described as an animal’s sacrifice, but until recently their retrieval often entailed the sacrifices of enslaved and indentured divers and laborers. Encoded in the pearl’s surface is a history of human endeavor, abuse, and aspiration—pain locked in the layers of a gleaming gem. By Fiona Lindsay Shen. Info.
UN ART NOUVEAU: MÉTAMORPHOSES DU BIJOU
Jewelry occupies a central place in the profound evolution experienced by aesthetics starting in the 1880s. It participated in the radical renewal of an imaginary fertilized by the expansion of scientific knowledge and by its dissemination in a widely shared visual culture. This book accompanies the exhibition A New Art: Metamorphoses of Jewelry, 1880–1914, at L’École, School of Jewelry Arts. More.
PAUL BRANDT
An emblematic artist of the 1920s, Brandt (1883–1952) played a major role in the revival of modern jewelry and decorative arts. Recognized by his peers, the Swiss maker worked alongside the biggest names, such as Fouquet, Templier, and Sandoz. This first monograph retraces his entire career, based on unpublished iconography and research. More.
CORA SHEIBANI
Despite the blandest possible cover of the book—an odd decision—Sheibani’s jewels are described as the product of a highly active imagination and designed to surprise and delight—miniature cakes and jellies that look good enough to eat; rings and bracelets that glow in the dark; shimmering clouds with diamond raindrops; jewels that stare back at you; and plant pots billowing with vegetation. The book marks the 20th anniversary of the eponymous brand. More.
