Luca Àdie

As a young artist, Luca Àdie had a natural affinity for telluric symbols. After first moving to Spain as a translator, they studied contemporary jewelry at Barcelona’s Escola Massana before being invited to the Glasgow School of Art as Artist in Residence. They have since completed their studies at Munich’s Academy of Fine Arts, and currently live and work in the city.

Check out Luca Àdie’s Maker PDF in AJF’s Library. It’s a convenient one-page fact sheet.

Artist’s statement: I like to play when making, creating works with a gestural, spontaneous, and childlike aesthetic. However, the colorful façade of these works is just the surface and, on closer inspection, they act as an entry point to raise awareness of current social phenomena, such as contemporary masculinity, identity, sex, and sexuality. I refer to the history of the crafted object, but incorporate stories from contemporary society and include humor as a tool of humanization, to build community and poke fun subversively at established power structures. Jewelry is usually small, often overlooked, and only really gets noticed for the cost of the raw materials. I aim to show that jewelry, as small as it may be, can act as a tool to initiate change and raise awareness—especially when worn on the body and taken into society.
