Matthew Hollern

Matthew Hollern is a designer craftsman living and working in Cleveland Heights, OH. In 2024 he completed a career of 35 years as professor of jewelry + metals at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he taught jewelry + metals, craft + design, CAD + digital fabrication, and entrepreneurship. He earned a BS at the University of Wisconsin—Madison with majors in art and French. In his junior year, he lived in Aix-en-Provence, France, where he attended the Université Aix-Marseille, and studied blacksmithing at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1989, he earned an MFA from Tyler School of Art - Temple University, and graduated summa cum laude. He has received research and professional development grants from the Society of North American Goldsmiths, Cleveland Foundation, Lilly Foundation, John and Maxeen Flower Fund, Cleveland Institute of Art, Community Partnership for Arts and Culture - Creative Workforce Fellowship, and two Individual Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and is included in public and private collections including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Design Museum Helsinki - Finland, the Vatican Archive, the Ohio Crafts Museum, the Cleveland Art Association, Alcatel-Sprint, and others.
