The 2019 Texas Metals Symposium took place October 12, 2019, at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, TX, hosted by the university’s Metals department program and club. This annual, free symposium is in its twelfth year and brings together a diverse and tight-knit community of metalsmiths and innovative speakers. Speakers included
- Ana Lopez, associate professor of metalsmithing and jewelry at the University of North Texas
- Sarah T. Roberts, professor of metals and studio manager at the Southwest School of Art
- Nicole Deschamps-Benke, senior lecturer for studio art: metals and the fabrication lab manager at Texas State University
- Rachelle Thiewes, professor emerita in the department of art at the University of Texas
- Jess Tolbert, assistant professor of art and head of the jewelry and metals program at University of Texas, El Paso
- Robly Glover, professor of jewelry design and metalsmithing at Texas Tech University
- Natalie Macellaio, professor of sculpture at Brookhaven Community College, in Dallas, TX
- Kathleen Janvier, adjunct professor at Brookhaven College, in Farmers Branch, TX, and lecturer at the University of Texas in Arlington
The conference coincided with the exhibition of Not So Lone Star Studios: A Gathering of Texas Makers, which was on at the Museum of Texas Tech University and featured the work of 38 Texas metalsmiths and jewelers. Here are some glimpses of the event, as well as the exhibition.
