The name of this piece, Sperare, means “to have hope.” It’s a term derived from the Latin root spes, meaning “to hope,” “to wait.” Having hope is important, as this feeling is usually associated with an optimistic expectation—the belief that what one hopes for can indeed be achieved. White hair (one of the materials used) is a reflection on the passage of time and serves as a metaphor for this waiting. And in such an erratic time as the one we live in, hope may be the only light that guides us; hence the significance of this piece, as a reminder of the need to preserve hope in an age of uncertainty.

Longing is connected to melancholy, nostalgia, loneliness, and maybe naive romance. Longing for something unattainable absorbs our thoughts, but it can also get us closer to ourselves and to others. Longing can be something recognizable, connecting, and present. The work of Ketli Tiitsar is made up of personal layers of history, but it invites us to take part and to connect.

“Throughout my practice, the line is a constant companion,” states Nellie Peoples. “A single line can be a layer, a border, a boundary, an edge, or a limit. It often begins as a sketch, then extends into three dimensions, taking form in wire. These lines are drawn from the intimate details of shells gathered from my local shore—the quiet lines of their growth, each one a record of time. In their abstraction, these markings expand beyond their origins: from the curve of a shell’s surface to the vast, unending lines of the cosmos.” The artist currently lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand.

Karin Johansson works with impressions from places that have been special to her. As an artist in residence in New Zealand, she got inspired by the colors and shapes of the land. Throughout her artistic practice, she has returned to enamel and the technique of enameling. A combination of decisions and control, together with an element of chance, adds to the moment of surprise and makes the process interesting. The fact that enamel is its own material, not just a color, makes it special. Even with the thinnest layer you can achieve depth and perspective. An imagination of something both near and distant.
