Tyler School of Art and Architecture

The Tyler School of Art was founded in 1935 by sculptor and arts patron Stella Elkins Tyler and her mentor, sculptor Boris Blai in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. She donated her nine-acre estate to Temple University for its creation. The school established a Rome campus in 1971, and in 2009 moved to a new, 255,000-square-foot facility at Temple’s Main Campus. In 2012, Temple’s architecture program joined the school and other built-environment disciplines were added a few years later. In 2019, the school officially changed its name to Tyler School of Art and Architecture under the leadership of Dean Susan E. Cahan. The Metals/Jewelry/CAD-CAM Program at Tyler, recognized as a national leader in the discipline, offers traditional jewelry-making and innovative digital practice. Tyler MJCC is known as a pioneer in the application of novel approaches, technologies, and processes. Students learn time-honored techniques and new methods in a cross-disciplinary environment. They work closely with faculty, who are also practicing artists and leaders in the field.

Doug Bucci is an artist and educator in the field of jewelry whose work utilizes digital processes to explore and display biological systems and the effect of disease on the body. Computer-aided technologies allow Bucci to view and simulate not only data but patterns and cell forms, which can be transformed into meaningful, personal, and wearable art. Bucci views his digital process as one that allows for a creative freedom unfound in traditional handmade methods.

His work is in the collections of Windsor Castle, Berkshire, London; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany; Newark Museum, New Jersey; Deutsche Goldschmiedehaus Hanau, Germany; Design Museo, Helsinki, Finland; and the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
